Week 1
1/19         In Class: Introduce Visual Storytelling syllabus, schedule, and course objectives. Review Picture This by Molly Bang and examine effective examples of narrative compositions. Cover Chapters 1 and 2 from Framed Ink.

Homework: Project 2 – Six Shots, Six Actions, and Six Emotions.. Using the assigned list and the information covered in Chapters 1 and 2 from Framed Ink, create six scenes that will visually communicate your combinations clearly to the rest of the class. No words are allowed!


Week 2
1/24         In Class: Review Project 2.

1/26         In Class: Cover Chapter 3 from Framed Ink. Begin Project 3 – Six More Shots
                 
Homework: Complete Project 3.


Week 3
1/31         In Class: Review Project 3. Cover Chapters 4 and 5 from Framed Ink.

                  Homework: Read Understanding Comics Chapter 1 handout.

2/2           In Class: Review Understanding Comics Chapter 1. Begin Project 4 – “Tying Your Shoe Instructional Comic.

Homework: Complete Project 4 –Tying Your Shoe Instructional Comic and Project 5 – Teach Something Instructional Comic.


Week 4
2/7           In Class:  Critique Tying Your Shoe. Switch Teach Something Instructional Comics.

Homework: Complete critique form for Teach Something.

2/9           In Class: Critique “Teach Something”. Assign Project 6 – Four Panels Four Scenes Comic.

Homework: Read Understanding Comics Chapters 2 and 3, and complete Four Panels Four Scenes.


Week 5
2/14         In Class: Switch Four Panels Four Scenes. Group Exercise - Four Panels Four Scenes Extended.

Homework: Complete critique form for Four Panels Four Scenes.

2/16         In Class: Critique Four Panels Four Scenes. Assign Project 7 – Pacing Comic.

                  Homework: Read Understanding Comics Chapter 4. Complete Pacing Comic.

Week 6
2/21         In Class: Switch Pacing Comics. In-Class exercise.

                  Homework: Complete critique form for Pacing Comics.

2/23         In Class: Critique Pacing Comics. Assign Project 8 - Hurry Up and Wait Comic.

                  Homework: Complete Hurry Up and Wait Comic


Week 7
2/28         In Class: Switch Hurry Up and Wait Comics. In-Class exercise.

                  Homework: Complete critique form for Hurry Up and Wait Comic.

3/2           In Class: Critique Hurry Up and Wait Comic. Assign Project 9 – Micro-fiction Adaptation Comic.

Homework: Read Understanding Comics Chapters 5 and 6. Read Micro-fiction selections and choose one story to adapt as a comic. Prepare thumbnail sketches to review in class.


Week 8
3/7           In Class: Review Chapters 5 and 6. Review Micro-fiction Adaptation thumbnails.

                  Homework: Continue working on Micro-fiction Adaptation.

3/9           In Class: Continue working on Micro-fiction Adaptation Comic.

Homework: Continue working on Micro-fiction Adaptation Comic.
